We were out on a
mission, and we didn't have time for a proper meal. It was after eight o'clock and we needed to get back to
Bella Gelateria before it closed.
After our
successful night at L'Abattoir, we were in a cocktail mood. The
Lobby Lounge at the Fairmont Pacific Rim was the perfect choice.
Of course, at any proper bar or lounge, you can order any cocktail, but it's nice when there's a menu to help those of us who either have limited knowledge of mixed drinks, or who want a little inspiration to try something new.
We weren't trying to be difficult, but we ended up challenging our server with our inarticulate description of the type of drink we wanted. Unfazed, she offered a few suggestions and we decided on the Scratched Sidecar, which is basically a
sidecar with orange egg-white crema.

The second choice was a little easier, a 20th Century, featuring Tanqueray gin, crème de cacao,
Lillet, and lemon juice. Both were lovely choices.

Now, since it is not a good idea to keep drinking on an empty stomach, and since it was our anniversary, we ordered the seafood tower. Of the choices on the wine list, the Stag's Hollow Sauvignon Blanc seemed the natural pairing, and we were gratified when our server concurred.

sauces for the seafood tower |
The seafood tower came with four different unidentified sauces/garnishes. Looking at the picture above, at the top was a tartar sauce like we've rarely experienced. At the right was freshly grated horseradish. At the left was a garlicky vinegary sauce, and at the bottom was
kochujang-like cocktail sauce.
The seafood tower came with two different kinds of raw oyster, prawns and a half lobster. Since moving to west coast, I've had limited opportunity to eat lobster, and this was indeed a special treat.

Ever since I was a child, I've had a fascination with hotel lobbies. I would imagine the cosmopolitan world walking by. The stories they could tell! Of course, the luxury of a voluminous armchair is disturbingly satisfying as well. The airiness of the lobby was vivifying, and the spectacular gas fireplace warmed our spirits and our toes.
The recorded music played during most of our time there was a delicious jazz mix of new artists and old standards, just like we often play at home. Shortly after nine o'clock, the live piano began. Yes, in a post-
PC world we're not supposed to notice things like this, but we liked how the piano player was chosen based on his ability and not on his looks. No disrespect intended, but the older gentleman wouldn't be mistaken for a young
Oscar Peterson. His talented playing style was reminiscent of
Vince Guaraldi.
Our server, learning of our mission, even checked the hours of Bella Gelato and assured us that we would make it before it closed. We reluctantly wrapped up our evening, and bid farewell to an immensely satisfying visit.
