Bella Gelateria

>> Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Normally, for our anniversary, we pick a fancy restaurant and indulge in a leisurely meal. This time we had a little bit of a problem. We really, really wanted to try Bella Gelateria, and we knew that if we ate a regular meal, we wouldn't be able to fully enjoy the experience. Fortunately, we found a solution.

Knowing we had a few minutes to spare before closing, we walked into the shop, full of high expectations. Not wanting to be too gluttonous, we order a two-flavour cone and a three-flavour cup. Our flavours were honey nougat, Tahitian vanilla, chocolate ricotta, stracciatella, and dolce de leche. We even were given a dollop of strawberry sorbetto for free!

The intensity of flavours is astounding. It almost feels as though the actual strawberry or coconut is melting in your mouth. The texture is far smoother and robust than any other gelato we've tried on this side of the Atlantic.

Earlier in the evening, we had walked by and stopped to take a few shots. We were especially taken by the juxtaposition of the bicycle (okay, tricycle) with the gelato. Sustainable transportation and sweet indulgence -- what's not to like.

Fully embracing the 100-mile diet philosophy, not only are ingredients sourced locally, but also flavours are inspired by the seasonal harvest: raspberries, strawberries and black mission figs to name a few. Plus, we must mention that all the milk is organic, straight from the local Avalon Dairy.

We snuck in two more large orders before closing time. And would have slept there overnight if we thought we could get away with it. This time we got espresso, Tahitian vanilla, lavender, Thai coconut milk, yogurt and honey nougat.

Part of the experience is the exuberance and graciousness of the proprietor, James Coleridge. His passion for his creations and for his business are clear. The thing is, even if he were tyrannical like Seinfeld's "soup nazi," people would still be lining up out the door for a taste of his magic in a scoop. And despite James's claims to be lucky to have set up shop in Vancouver, truly it is we who are the fortunate ones.
