Inspired by our recent visit to Café Régalade, we jumped right back into our French food endeavours with a return visit to Café Salade de Fruits. We first ate here many moons ago, and it was our first stop during last summer's escapade when we eventually ended up at L'Abattoir.
The extensive menu was almost too overwhelming, but we decided on two items from the menu board. Fletan au Four, a baked halibut served with rice and salad, was exquisite, with a perfectly cooked filet doused in a rich sauce.
The airy Tarte à l'oignon featured caramelized onions in scrumptious pastry crust.
Because the portion sizes were reasonable and not mega-sized, we had ample room for a cappuccino and a lemon tart (pictured at top). The lemon tart, while very good, especially with its brûlée top, lacked a certain intensity that we prefer in our lemon desserts.
Café Salade de Fruits brings you a real taste of France: the menus are completely in French, the staff all talk to each other in French, and even some customers converse in French. The decorations are somewhat kitschy, but that just adds to the appeal. The most important reason to eat at Café Salade de Fruits, however, is the food: simple, well-prepared and unpretentious.
