Edible Flours

A year ago, we began our blog with a series of posts on French bakeries in Vancouver. It's only fitting that our anniversary post is about a bakery. Edible Flours, a 100% vegan bakery, opened its doors only a few days ago in Kitsilano. We first heard of the opening of their retail location a few weeks ago, but at the time, the true significance of the event did not register.
Since our children are allergic to milk products and eggs, among other things, pretty much any desserts they consume are made at home. Sure there is the odd bakery with a few dairy- and egg-free items, but we find that the high risk of cross contamination makes it hardly worth our while.
After visiting and speaking to one of the owners at Edible Flours, we realize we now have a legitimate option for purchasing baked treats. The owners truly understand the importance of food safety and respecting the dietary requirements and preferences of their customers, without sacrificing taste and appearance. As an example, for their gluten-free baking, in addition to using separate tools and ingredients, the bakery starts off in the morning with a clean kitchen to make all the gluten-free goods for the day.
All the above would be enough to make Edible Flours a fantastic bakery for people with food restrictions, but they also care about baking that is healthy for you and the planet, using whole grains and unrefined oils and sweeteners, organic when possible.
We brought home a chocolate cupcake (above), a strawberry scone,
three chocolate doughnuts,
and a chocolate chocolate chip cookie.
Each item was popular with varying degrees among our children, but the clear favourite was the cookie. Even if you don't eat vegan, gluten free, avoid lactose, or have allergies, Edible Flours will satisfy your craving for something delicious and sweet.
