halibut with broth lemon
Hark! Do I hear Paris calling? I'm a sucker for anything French, and when my friend suggested Bistrot Bistro, I could hardly say no. The truth is, we'd been meaning to visit for a while now.

The weather was warm enough that they had their near floor-to-ceiling windows wide open. It was almost like dining on a patio. The beautifully decorated room had rows of tea lights scattered on the walls. The grey and green colour scheme was very soothing.

We decided to share a couple of appetizers, the mix baguette tapenade and the warm caramelized onion maplewood smoked bacon gruyère tart. The baguette was perfectly crusty on the outside and soft and slightly chewy on the inside. The tapenade was pretty straightforward, but executed very well. The server asked us if we also wanted butter.

The onion tart, though small, was packed with flavour, and the accompanying greens came with a sweetish vinaigrette that went well with the everything on the plate.

Our group seemed headed for all seafood main courses, but thankfully, one of us ordered the rabbit with two mustards and white wine cream. Our seafood mains were halibut with broth lemon; fisherman stew with pacific cod, halibut, shrimp, scallop, mussel; and shrimps scallops provençal flambée pastis. We asked whether the shrimps and scallops were flambéed at the table, but the answer was, no, in the kitchen. Safer for all of us, we suspect.

Since everything is à la carte at this restaurant, we chose three sides to share: gratin dauphinois, which is scalloped potatoes with three kinds of cheese; ratatouille; and glazed carrots. Our server mistakenly brought us some frites, and when we immediately pointed out the error, she said to keep it. Who are we to refuse free food?

pommes alumettes & mayo

After very little discussion, we decided to get four desserts: lemon tart, crème brulée, profiteroles, and chocolate mousse.

A nice touch was the cork "birthday cake" brought for a member of our party.

With very reasonable prices for the quality of food you get, Bistrot Bistro is a good option for you are in the mood for yummy French food in a relaxed atmosphere.
