Sunshine Diner

>> Thursday, December 30, 2010

When our son gets to decide on a lunch spot, he often chooses the Sunshine Diner, probably mostly for its kitschiness but also because they know how to make a good basic burger, without any kind of fillers or fancy schmancy brioche buns that other places insist on using.

Service is always friendly, and although the kitchen can get backed up when it's really busy, it's never been an unreasonable wait. The quality of the food, however, has rarely suffered. On this visit, just before Christmas, everything ran like a finely tuned machine, and our food came out quickly. The burgers we ordered were great, and the fries were nicely crisp with a good potato flavour, just as usual.

We got to sit right next to the Wurlitzer jukebox, just one of the many decorative details that add to the ambience.

Plenty of ketchup to go around!

The place was decked out for the holidays, of course. They even had seasonal
cartoons playing on the television, such as Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.

As with most diners, breakfast is served all day. We were able to put in a special order, and the eggs were cooked perfectly, passing the litmus test.

For thirty-six years, the Sunshine Diner was a block west in the location currently occupied by Iki Japanese Restaurant. Several years ago, the owners packed up and moved to a larger space in a brand new building. Working with a clean slate, they were able to decorate in a eye-popping 1950's style, much to the delight of our son, and many other loyal customers.
