DOW: Mulled Wine

Yes, we've made mulled cranberry sauce, but have we made mulled wine? Not recently. Since we were not having turkey for our Christmas Eve dinner, and it's pretty weird to make cranberry sauce for roast beef, we were more than happy to experiment.

Inspired by several glühwein recipes we found online, we devised the following:

  • 1 bottle cheap but drinkable red wine
  • 1/4 cup orange juice (one orange squeezed)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 8-12 whole cloves
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 3-5 cardamon seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 2 black peppercorns
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)

Warm up all the ingredients, with the exception of the brandy, over low heat, being careful not to boil. Just before serving, add the optional brandy and stir.
