DOW: Gimlet

>> Saturday, November 13, 2010

Another week, another classic cocktail! There are many stories surrounding the origin of the gimlet from the late nineteenth/early twentieth century, but the one I like the best is that the drink was devised by British Royal Navy Surgeon General Sir Thomas D. Gimlette, as a way of getting scurvy-preventing lime into sailors' diets.

There are also many recipes for gimlets. We tried two of the more common ones.

The first one is the stronger one, but with less of a lime taste

  • 2 oz gin
  • 1/2 oz Rose's lime juice
  • lime for garnish
Shake with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime slice or wedge.

The second is a little sweeter
  • 1 1/2 oz gin
  • 1 1/2 oz Rose's lime juice
  • lime for garnish
Mix in a lowball glass with ice cubes. Garnish with a lime slice or wedge.
