Red Onion

>> Tuesday, May 10, 2011

The Red Onion, one of several "destination" restaurants in Kerrisdale, opened a generation ago, back in 1985. Countless diners have enjoyed tasty fresh burgers and hotdogs while witnessing the bustle of the open kitchen.

Today was our first visit back since the restaurant was sold to new owners back in February. The place has been streamlined somewhat, with a smaller menu including fewer dessert options, but most strikingly, the loss of the red onion presented alongside your bill.

We were there on a packed Sunday lunchtime, which seemed to strain the waitstaff, although our food arrived in a timely fashion.

The Red Onion salad was fine, though we probably should have gone with our server's recommendation, spinach and sesame salad, instead.

The chicken (at top) and beef (below) burgers, were great,

as was the plain kid's burger.

Fries, of course, are mandatory, at least for us.

What would a burger be without a beer. Just a burger, I guess.

Word has it that the original owners have a new project in the works. If the staying power of the Red Onion is any indication, I think it will be very successful.
