Hitoe Sushi

>> Friday, February 18, 2011

We are very lucky to have a tremendous choice of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver. There are high quality, high price ones like Miku, En, or the famous Tojo’s. There are all-you-can-eat sushi factories that focus on quantity over quality. And izakayas still seem to be popping up everywhere. Of the many other categories, however, one of our favourites is the Japanese-run, food first neighbourhood sushi joint. Among those, Hitoe Sushi, located across from McBride Park in Kitsilano, is a shining example.

On this, our third visit, we ordered three items for lunch, a chirashi don (above), a real-crab California roll,

and a uni-unagi-ikura don.

The dishes were all artfully presented on beautiful ceramic plates, with real garnishes like bamboo leaves, leaf lettuce, and pea shoots. The horseradish was grated, not reconstituted from powder. The sushi rice was properly seasoned. The fish was fresh. Our tea was brought in a pretty pot that lasted us through the entire meal.

The service was very friendly and accommodating. What more could we ask for? I can think of only two things: improve the lacklustre decor and get a licence to serve beer.

I have to say, your categorizing Hitoe Sushi as one of those "Japanese-run, food first neighbourhood sushi joint[s]" is spot on. Perhaps that's why things like décor and a certification to serve alcohol have taken a back seat? But I do agree - although the décor isn't bad, there is definite room for improvement... and who knows? A more appealing interior [and even exterior] may help to draw in even more business.

In any case, I'm glad that others enjoy the food there as much as I do. :)
